The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

You know I saw on ebay that the collector's editions were posted for $159-$200 and I thought "wtf?!? Anyone can get them for $99....)

I guess not! Must be what spiked it. Glad my order has been in for months.

What are the chances Gearbox would publish some sort of book of their production art? Haven't other games done this? "The Art of Halo" or somesuch? I just know these guys have done a shit ton of work both in recreating and expanding the Aliens universe and I'd dig having a hard copy of some of it.

Some of the designers have mentioned their desire to do this, on twitter and on Gearbox forums, but I don't think there is anything official.

Unfortunately they ran it from 3:30pm to 4:30pm, so those of us who work for a living missed it.

I just sent a Tweet asking them to do next week's competition a bit later in the day, so not just kids take part.

They ran this week's even earlier; 1pm to 3pm.

I Tweeted them again and this time they replied that they'd run next week's at a later time. :)

I am just more bummed that they went with the old system of having to scour the map for health and armor packs. The regenerating health scheme that most games use now seems to just flow better and doesn't slow down the game play as much.

For those of you that have actually played an earlier build was it always like this? Did you always have to look for health and armor pick ups?

I thought the article stated it did have the slowly regenerating health system. The armor 'power ups' or whatever you call them did seem more traditional. It sounded to me like a hybrid of the old school and new style? I think it will be play out just fine.

It is supposed to regenerate in blocks like AvP did. So as long as say the entire first block isnt drained it will refill after.

"Old system"?
Even the latest games such as Far Cry 3 use health packs and armour upgrades, along with slow regen of health bars.
So just play the game when it comes out and see what it's like, okay?

I'd like to see an option to have to actually treat your injuries, in a mini-game perhaps.
(Thats for all games in general)

Didn't know about Far Cry 3. Haven't played it. What is it's multiplayer like with that Health system?

And yes i do consider it the old system. I don't recall playing a game that had a health system since the Halo CE days.

A health block system introduces a sense of panic and danger in the quiet sections of the game. With regenerating health, the only time a player feels threatened is when in combat.

The same way a player can worry whether they have enough ammo to make it through the next encounter, you are going to be nervous exploring quiet corridors when you only have a sliver of health and busted armour between you becoming a xeno's lunch.

The fact there is a health/armour system shows that Gearbox are planning on the quiet moments of suspense, and not just a run-and-gun shooter.

I hear you on that. But it can also get irritating If you get stuck on a checkpoint with just a sliver of health and start dying over and over again.

That's more to do with poor choice of checkpoint location and/or level design.

Checkpoints should be at quiet points, with nearby access to a quick health top up, imho.

e.g. Doing missions in FC3 which have checkpoints, if you die you restart which the health/armour you had originally/before the last checkpoint.
I've not played a game with a bad checkpoint/health system since AvP on the Atari Jaguar, where you could get stuck in airducts with low health, no way to top it up and acid (from shot Xenos) blocking all paths, meaning instant death.

Regenerating health is the biggest "consolification" of videogames I've ever seen. The health block system with slight regeneration is a great compromise - If you get shot repeatedly, you're unlikely to be fine in 45 seconds, and a horror game with regen health wouldn't be too scary at all.

I luv the idea of the health and armor. just finished th eMarine Story in AVP2 and it does suck when you have low health, and a shit storm happens but thats what makes it more epic. are you a good enough marine to make it thru this battle or not.

You young whippersnappers don't know you're alive.
Back in my day, this were all fields, and there was none of this new-fangled "Health" nonsense!
Instant death if an enemy caught you, and once you used your three lives, that was IT! GAME OVER, MAN! GAME OVER!
