The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Yeah, I know, photos and white levels and different lighting and all that... but I just brought the two paint jobs closer together for another comparison test and wanted to share.
Image
The various shades flow into each other quite nicely (between the original and my pic) and this is as close as I am ever going to get it with this particular set of armour.

Amazing job, ObiHahn. The only thing I'm not so sure about are the very big letters on the helmet. I absolutely LOVE everything else! Fantastic! This might be the best paint job on a colonial marines armor I've ever seen. I would love to follow your lead and meet you on some convetions in germany, but I simply can't afford that. I'm sure you've spend over 1000 Euro for it.

Thanks, MandaloreSC! It's actually way more than I care to admit, Euro-wise.

The big letters are a bit of a bold statement, yeah, but I had to include them thanks to this bad motherf****er (who is also the man the call Jayne!), may favourite character in all of the Vietnam movies I have ever seen so far:
Image

For days when bold nerdy statements like that are not what I'm after, I have a camo cloth helmet cover coming. That will be way more subtle, slogan-wise.

@MandaloreSC: Forget the cost for a moment and feel free to join us at any drop! The state of your build isn’t import to have a good time.

@ObiHahn: Looking great; and it would look even better when photographed at FaRK (ScFi background and bluish light).

FARK still isn't a done deal for me, but there will be pics at RPC in Cologne. :)

BTW, quick edit, I have done some more small personalization, this time on the helmet.
It is a wordplay on my name Hahn, it means rooster or cock (tee hee) in German, that is why...

Too much? It's removable, only metal hot glued on metal.

I made my metal grenade that I got from Retrogarde as a static metal piece a "working" grenade, now the metal plunger can be depressed via a simple spring.
Image

I have 3 of the (controversial) SD studios grenades from ebay on their way to me, let's see how they compare and if they will look okay displayed together with this one.

Today will be a meeting of our future ALIENS marine team at my place, and the other two grunts will bring their armour with them. Guess who's going to paint their camo as well?

If I had some armor, I would ask you to Dennis. No - I would try it myself, becoming frustrated, throw everything against the wall, crying out loud and then ask you for help. :D

Come on that is an invitation from your side. And it looks like you got with MandaloreSC another costumer. :)
BTW: The grenade looks great. If you can bring it with you to RPC
we can make a little comparison with the different versions we have.

I've been a member of the 501st german garrison in past, Dennis. So it's absolutely possible we've met at some events in the past. I've been a Scout trooper (TB1301) and I have a large collection of Star Wars and Aliens action figures too. So whenever I see your pictures I think we have a lot in common. I too wanted my movie gear to be 100% accurate, so I think I can understand how you felt about your paint job issues. Not easy to match the original 100% when the light conditions on all the reference pics are different. The job you've done with your armor and gear is absolutely amazing. The grenades look great. I even like your cock - ehm - Hahn - ehm - got to go...

Here's something I have been working on, my own files for close-to-screen-accurate patches, these could not have been done without the generous help from Chef.

I also referenced the pics from the recent uniform on ebay, also the pics of the patches on Harry's site.

Please do not reproduce or share without asking me first.
There's something planned with Chef, since I have no access to any decent printers.

My files are vector graphics and could be scaled to any size without loss of sharpness and quality, no pixels involved.

Oh, and something I've been meaning to ask you guys: does anyone have or know how ro find the TTF /TrueTypeFont "Keypunch" with actual lowercase letters? All I can find is the font with the capitals as scaled down versions for lowercase use. :/

Yeah, right? That's what I thought. The weathering really makes the individual hues kick and gives them a VERY accurate look. I will post a comparison pic soon of my gear painted fresh from the tin and in different states of weathering, including final version.

And here's a preview of my final vectorised files for accurate(ish) patches, it's as close as I am going to come to the real deal using the references I had access to.

Almost the final piece to the puzzle that is my finished costume.

The original font is named "Data 70", designed by British artist Bob Newman for the Letraset Type Studio in 1970.

It does have proper lower-case letters.
